In the early 1960s, a young woman in her twenties, Veronika Marék, wrote the children’s book Laci and the Lion. The book was published and has since been reissued every year in Japan, where nearly 700,000 copies have been sold. In Japan, the little red lion from the story has become a symbol of finding courage for generations of children.
The creators of We Need a Lion set out to explore the story behind this extraordinary success—speaking with Japanese and Hungarian readers, children, and Veronika Marék herself to uncover the secret of its enduring appeal.
After the film screening, directors Yvonne Kerékgyártó and Linda Dombrovszky will join Veronika Marék for a discussion.
