In recent weeks, visitors to Expo 2025 Osaka have enjoyed a rich and diverse selection of musical performances. Organized by the Hungary Pavilion, the concerts have offered a worthy showcase of Hungary’s musical heritage – from traditional folk music to exciting jazz and swing fusions.

The concert series opened with a performance by Romengo. The Kossuth Prize-winning Mónika Lakatos and her fellow musicians captivated the audience within moments with their energetic and vibrant show. The sounds of the traditional “kanna” and “teknő” instruments, combined with the ancient rhythms of Roma music, created a joyful celebration that attendees will long remember. A few days later, Mónika Lakatos returned to the stage with the Gypsy Voices, once again demonstrating the powerful energy of authentic Vlach Roma music: the usually reserved Japanese audience joined in singing and dancing, transforming the stage into a lively dance hall for the evening.

Next came the Naszály Band, who performed some of the most beautiful melodies from the Carpathian Basin. Their concert was followed by the Expo’s fireworks show, adding a festive touch to the evening. It was a true musical experience that meaningfully connected Hungarian culture with the Japanese audience.

The series continued with Magos Folk Band, a key figure in Hungary’s folk dance revival movement for over a decade. Their performance, featuring the musical heritage of both Hungary and Transylvania, was at once professionally outstanding and deeply emotional.

Following the traditional experiences, Loop Doctors gave the audience a fresh twist by blending the harmonic world of Bartók and Kodály with jazzy rhythms and electronic elements. Their performance was energetic yet deeply respectful of tradition, offering a new dimension to the possibilities of Hungarian folk music. The standing ovation at the end was a clear sign of the concert’s success.

The grand finale was delivered by Group’n’Swing Band. Their performance combined upbeat swing and boogie melodies with elegant stage presence and sparkling energy, with charismatic singer Zoltán Mujahid at the center. By the second half of the show, even those who had started out seated were on their feet, celebrating.

And this is far from the end! The Hungarian musical programs continue at Expo 2025 Osaka. In August, more exceptional performers will join us to further enrich the Hungary Pavilion’s cultural offerings.
