The exhibition material explores how Otto von Habsburg contributed to the development of international relations between Japan and the transatlantic world in the aftermath of the Second World War. His efforts played a key role in enhancing Japan’s international reputation and standing, while also facilitating the establishment of economic ties and political cooperation. From the 1950s onwards, the Archduke was a frequent visitor to Japan, where – thanks to his outstanding networking abilities – he built close relationships not only with members of the Imperial Family, but also with numerous leading political figures, including several Prime Ministers, as well as influential economic actors. His work in the European Parliament, particularly his commitment to dismantling totalitarian regimes rooted in communist ideology and bringing down the Iron Curtain – as exemplified by his involvement in the Pan-European Picnic – served as a significant source of inspiration for Japanese political leaders and public opinion alike.
The Japan-related archival material curated by the Otto von Habsburg Foundation in Budapest, selected highlights of which are featured in the exhibition, offers valuable insight into the nature, dynamics, and complexities of the global Cold War and the international order that followed. Moreover, it provides meaningful reference points for contemporary political thinking and action in the international arena.
